We are arguably experiencing the biggest social movement since the industrial revolution. Social media is here and nobody could have seen just how massive the impact was going to be. Social media is the greatest cultural phenomenon of our time, a big call but one that can be supported with some rather simple statistics. Let’s look at the trend of media since it’s one of its earliest innovations; the radio. It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million users.  The next evolution was television, it took television 13 years to reach the same mark. The internet took four years while the iPod had 50 million users in three. Facebook added 100 million users in less than 9 months. If Facebook was a country in would be the world’s fourth largest. Ashton Kutcher and Ellen Degeneres (combined) have more Twitter followers than the  populations of Ireland, Norway, or Panama.

Regardless of your own personal view you cannot ignore the shift that has swept the world. You are now faced with the choice as a teacher, do you ingore this shift or harness its power? The choice is yours, but be aware, the shift has come.
